Steven Spielberg’s science fiction film about a UFO, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, features Devils Tower National Monument; a spectacular 867-foot rock which formed from volcanic lava millions of years ago.

Another film shot in Wyoming, Shane (1953), was based on Wyoming’s 1892 Johnson County War. Many scenes were shot in Grand Teton National Park and the fictional town and homestead were constructed in Jackson Hole.

Several modern films were also shot in Wyoming, including Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Winter scenes were filmed in wonderful locations including Grand Teton National Park, Kelly Warm Springs, and the National Elk Refuge.

Grand Targhee Resort is a top skiing and snowboarding destination in Wyoming with an average of over 500 inches of snow per year, without the huge crowds usually present at larger ski areas. Those who want to try different winter activities can go cat skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, tubing, and snowmobiling. There is also a Kids Club and childcare that will keep your children entertained, giving you some time to ski on the more challenging slopes alone. Both adults and children wanting to learn to ski or improve their skills can take private or group lessons at the Grand Targhee Ski & Snowboard School. The winter season goes from late November until late April.

 

One of the most relaxing and scenic ways to explore the quaint city of Cheyenne is by taking a free horse-drawn carriage tour. You will see beautiful and unique sites like the historic Cheyenne Depot Museum and the luxurious Nagle Warren Mansion B&B. The carriage driver will provide narration about the different historical sites and buildings you pass on the ride, allowing you to gain a deeper insight into Cheyenne’s rich history. These tours are the ideal summer activity as they run every day from 11am-5pm in June, July and August, and Wednesday-Sunday in May and September.

Jackson Hole Old West Days is an annual event which will be held on May 23-27 this year and features live music, theatrical entertainment, and rodeo events. You can go on horse-drawn carriage stage coach rides, compete in bow and arrow and hawk and knife competitions, go on a free historical walking tour of Jackson, and even watch a re-enactment of a shootout in the town square! This event is perfect for families as there are arts and crafts for kids, line dancers, country western music, and cowboy poetry. Have a chuckwagon dinner with cowboy entertainment at the nationally acclaimed Bar J Wranglers.

The Wind River Indian Reservation Driving Tour allows you to immerse yourself in Native American culture through significant sites and idyllic scenery. The Wind River Indian Reservation is home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes, and the tour starts at the headquarters of the government of these tribes at Fort Washakie. On this tour you will see Fort Washakie Cemetery where the last chief of the Shoshone Tribe is buried, as well as Sacajawea’s cemetery which has a life-sized bronze statue honouring the famous guide of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. You can also explore the Eastern Shoshone Cultural Center which has intriguing exhibits of tribal arts and crafts, as well as St. Stephen’s Mission which has original buildings from the Catholic Mission and a historic remodelled Church where Mass is held.
